What is the MTAQ?

The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTAQ), an organisation of employers in the auto industry, dates back to 1929 when the Garage and Service Station Association (GASSA) was formed in Brisbane by a group of enthusiastic businessmen.

As it expanded to other sectors of the industry, it has had several changers of name, adopting its present title in 1986.

The Association comprises 14 separate divisions, each representative of a special area of the industry for example service stations, new and used car dealers, farm machinery dealers, automotive electrics and air conditioning specialist and engine re-conditioners.

The MTAQ contributes to the development of the industry in many ways.  It has a highly successful Motor Industry Training Department which is now the largest automotive apprentice trainer in Queensland.

The Association co-operates with and advises the Government on specific projects involving the motor industry.  One important example of this has been its involvement over the past few years in the formulation of the new Property Agents & Motor Dealers Act, which replaced the outmoded Auctioneers & Agents Act.

Through its strongly identified relationship with all levels of Government, MTAQ is involved on an ongoing basis in all issues which impact on the broad spectrum of the industry.

The Association has regional offices in Townsville and Rockhampton.  In addition, MTAQ staff from Brisbane constantly travel across Queensland to cater for the needs of member businesses.

The Association works to a strict Code of Ethics whose theme is to act honestly and fairly in all dealings with the public and conduct business with professional courtesy and integrity.  It offers a wide variety of services to members – industrial relations, technical information, industry-specific publications and stationery, training, legal advice, and an approved superannuation fund, to mention a few.
