MTA Queensland welcomes the Parliamentary Committee’s recommendation for Motor Dealers

On Friday 28th April 2017 the Parliamentary Committee handed down their Report in relation to Recommendations for the Trading (Allowable Hours) Amendment Bill 2017.

MTA Queensland can proudly announce victory on behalf of the members' collective voice!

The committee made three recommendations - one of which relates to motor vehicle and caravan retailers, where it was stated that there was an overwhelming call from these retailers for the current status quo to apply to their trading hours. Following careful consideration of the issues, the committee made a recommendation that the Bill be amended to exclude the application of the changes to motor vehicle or caravan retailers.

The Report states:

"The committee heard no support from the motor vehicle dealer and caravan retail industries during
this inquiry for the extension of the core trading hours to these industries.

Motor Trades Association Queensland (MTAQ) stated that there is no empirical evidence of
consumers seeking Sunday trading for the motor vehicle dealing sector. The consensus view of its
members is that the current QIRC Trading Hours Non-exempt Shops Selling Motor Vehicles State be retained with no changes and the Bill be amended to reflect this view. The deregulation should proceed unless simultaneous and appropriate amendments are made and stapled to industry industrial relations provisions that apply to the motor vehicle sector.

Several individual motor vehicle retailers also advised that they believe there is no overwhelming for vehicle retailers to open on Sundays. They advise that the purchase of a vehicle is often a decision as opposed to impulse buy. The industry advised it has not received any calls from for them to open for longer hours on weekends or public holidays. Additionally, one submitter that there will be obstacles to overcome in transferring and delivering a vehicle to a purchaser on Sunday.

The committee recommends that the Bill be amended to exclude the application of the changes to motor vehicle or caravan retailers.
