David's Diary - The final countdown
After barely getting over the Hyundai Nationals weekend before last, the MTAQ Racing Team is back in action this weekend for the Final round of the Queensland Championships! Our final hit out for what has been a very enjoyable (and sometimes stressful) 2017!
This time, we are back in familiar surroundings at Morgan Park in Warwick – our third visit to the rural track this year. I am very excited to go back to Warwick and see how we go, as I think the car is much better than last time we had it up there as we have gradually improved things over the course of the season. As you may recall, we were able to qualify well last time there, and recorded our best finish so far – a 4th, so the aim is to improve on that.
The Queensland Championship is on the line between this seasons front runners, Cam Bartholomew and Brock Giblin. With only 11 points separating them heading into the weekend, it will be intense at the front. Cam and Brock proved at the Nationals recently that they are 2 of the quickest blokes in the country, particularly Cam who took Pole and fastest lap at the Nationals – no mean feat. To beat these pair, is going to be a huge ask. We were a little way off them in terms of speed last time at Warwick, but we have stepped forward a bit again since then. If we continue our rate of improvement, we should be on their bumpers on Sunday - And when championships are on the line, anything can happen as we saw in the Supercars finale last weekend!
The weather for the weekend could be the deciding factor- with rain forecast on both Saturday and Sunday, that adds a bit of extra excitement and an extra unknown for us as we have never ran our car in full wet conditions. We did get a small insight at the recent Nationals, with one of the heat races run in the damp, and if that is any indication, it will be a handful in the wet!
Our goal for the weekend is to bring home a trophy, which means we have to be Top 3 for the weekend. I think we can do it, and anything higher than 3rd would be just fantastic. What it requires is a drama free, consistent weekend – something that has proved elusive all year as luck has not been with us We generally have to fight our way through from a lowly grid spot. There are probably 6 or 7 cars that will be in contention to nab that 3rd place, so we will have a fight on our hands. The plan is qualify well and harass the top 2 or 3 and pick up some silverware – that would round out the year nicely!
Thank you again to everyone for the tremendous support, and we will be trying hard to do everyone proud!
