Workplace Health and Safety Incident Alert
Workplace Health and Safety has issued a warning regarding fuel systems after a young worker was badly burnt when draining a fuel system that was not adequately isolated.
MTA Queensland encourage members to remain vigilant and educated on all Workplace Health and Safety issues to avoid injury and/or fines due to negligence or unsafe practices.
The young worker was draining the fuel system of a boat when residual fuel that had collected in the bilge of the boat caught fire. He sustained significant burns to his arm, face, nose and throat requiring hospital treatment.
In order to prevent similar incidents like this businesses must ensure flammable liquids, including petrol, ethanol and solvents which give off hazardous vapours must be managed properly to avoid ignition. Staff must be educated and made aware that transferring fuel from one container to another can create static electricity which can also cause vapours to ignite and the risk of these vapours igniting is further increased when working in a confined space.
Prosecution and compliance fines have been issued up to $125,000.
